A backup generator is frequently a separate interconnection program at the same utility.

Adding a backup generator alongside existing solar and battery is easy to treat as an afterthought on the same paperwork. Many utilities do not see it that way: standby and backup generation often has its own interconnection or parallel generation program, its own application, and its own screens, distinct from the PV/storage program the rest of the system falls under.
