How the size is measured

the array DC nameplate in kW, applied with no conversion factor. The manual defines kW as kilowatts of direct current for photovoltaic systems of 50 kW or smaller, which covers every residential and small commercial job. Above 50 kW, and for every non photovoltaic technology, CoServ measures in kW AC instead.

Size bands and what each one obliges

No insurance is required at this size, in the manual’s words not required. A $150 application fee applies. Review is published at 15 business days for facilities up to 250 kW.

Insurance becomes mandatory at not less than $1,000,000 per occurrence, and CoServ may require that it be named as an additional insured. The $150 application fee still applies up to 250 kW. Note that the basis of measurement has changed to AC at this point.

The screens that decide it

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. CoServ may require a standard meter socket for a second meter measuring the full output of the system, at member cost. Is one required at this address?
  2. CoServ publishes no fifteen percent screen and no minimum load test. What circuit or transformer limit applies here, and is there headroom?
  3. Engineering fees are published only as as required and are at CoServ’s discretion. What is the estimate for this job?

Worth knowing before you quote

A system is in parallel any time it is connected to CoServ’s system in any way, even if the member does not intend to export, so a non export battery still requires an application. Backup only non export systems under 50 kW pay no application fee and a visible load break disconnect is preferred but not required. There is no net metering: CoServ pays its avoided cost of wholesale power under a separate purchase agreement, and states that it will not make purchases that would breach its all power requirements contracts with its power suppliers. A single generating facility may not serve multiple meters or multiple members. Monthly charges include a $10.00 base plus a $15.00 Distributed Generation Customer Charge.
