How the size is measured

the AC output in kW. Every threshold in the standard and in the program terms is written in AC output, including the scope of less than 200 kW output, the 25 kW AC net metering ceiling, the 200 kW AC direct generation ceiling and the disconnect exemption. There are no kVA or DC terms anywhere in the standard, which makes this one of the cleanest AC bases in the platform.

Size bands and what each one obliges

No application fee and no insurance are published at any size, both confirmed by reading the standard in full. The disconnect switch may be omitted only if all three conditions hold: the system is inverter based and UL 1741 certified for anti islanding, AC output is 25 kW or less, and service is under 600 volts on a self contained meter.

Direct generation takes a separate service and meter. A disconnect switch is required. Above 200 kW output, applications are considered case by case.

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. Is this service current transformer metered? If so the disconnect switch is required no matter how small the system is.
  2. Is this address on the secondary network? If so the 25 percent of minimum load cap and the annual functional testing obligation both apply.
  3. How long will review and permission to operate take? No approval timeline is published; the only published day counts are five working days of notice the customer owes EWEB.

Worth knowing before you quote

Excess generation is trued up monthly and does not roll over to subsequent months. An annual offset savings model is therefore wrong at EWEB by a wide margin, because summer overproduction is worth far less than at a utility that nets annually. No percentage of consumption cap and no aggregate program cap are published. The standard has no battery clause; the contractor program page states that a paired battery should never be able to dispatch onto the distribution system, so treat storage as effectively non export here. On network installations the controls must be functionally tested annually for the life of the facility and the results submitted, which is an ongoing operating cost. Where required, the disconnect must give a true visible open with no components obscured by the switch case or an arc shield, and engraved laminated nameplates with specified wording are required. Incentive payment runs roughly four to six weeks from EWEB approval. The residential program has the customer submitting the application and bids, so do not assume installer submission.
