Solar and battery interconnection rules in Idaho

Who this binds: investor owned utilities. A utility outside that list sets its own terms, so confirm who serves the address first.

How the size is measured

total nameplate capacity: the gross capacity as designated by the manufacturer maximum continuous operating rating in alternating current, stated in kilovolt-amps. Idaho Power also defines storage precisely: a DC coupled storage device takes the inverter kVA, an AC coupled device on an exporting system adds to the aggregate, and an AC coupled device on a non exporting system counts as zero kVA.

Size bands and what each one obliges

Under 100 kVA Size 0 to 99.999 kW

A $100 non refundable application fee applies. Inspection follows within ten business days. No insurance is required on this path; the million dollar requirement sits only in the agreement used at 3 MVA and above.

100 kVA to 500 kVA Size 100 to 500 kW

Reactive power requirements apply from 100 kVA. Inspection moves to twenty business days. Facilities up to 500 kVA may not require additional protection equipment.

Above 500 kVA additional company furnished protection equipment is required at customer cost. A feasibility study deposit of $1,000 may apply.

At 3 MVA and above the uniform customer generator interconnection agreement is required, which carries comprehensive general liability insurance of $1,000,000 per occurrence combined single limit with Idaho Power named as an additional insured.

The screens that decide it

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. Is this address served by Idaho Power, Avista, Rocky Mountain Power, a municipal or a cooperative? Idaho has no statewide rule, so outside Idaho Power none of this applies.
  2. For a paired battery, is it DC coupled or AC coupled, and is the system exporting? That decides whether the battery adds to the rated size at all: an AC coupled battery on a non exporting system counts as zero.
  3. What is the net metering size cap under the applicable service schedule? Schedule 68 governs interconnection, and eligibility limits sit in the separate service schedules.

Worth knowing before you quote

Idaho Power publishes no 15 percent screen and no minimum load test; it uses a feasibility review and study instead. There is no aggregate program cap and no percentage of consumption cap. Timelines are in business days: seven for the feasibility review, fifteen more if additional studies are needed, thirty for a feasibility study, ten for inspection at 100 kVA or less and twenty above it, and five business days to change the rate schedule, which is the effective permission to operate. An application expires if not completed within a year of the initial feasibility review, and an incomplete application is considered withdrawn after sixty days.

Read and recorded 2026-09-12. Idaho has no statewide interconnection rule. Interconnection is governed through Commission approved utility tariffs, and this is Idaho Power own. Avista and Rocky Mountain Power file their own and are not covered here. Idaho municipals and cooperatives are reached by none of it.
