Solar and battery interconnection rules in Georgia

Georgia Power renewable and nonrenewable resources (Tariff RNR). Every threshold below was read out of the document linked at the bottom of this page, and the same rules answer the free screening check.

Who this binds: investor owned utilities. A utility outside that list sets its own terms, so confirm who serves the address first.

How the size is measured

the alternating current peak generating capacity, determined by the aggregate nameplate capacity of the inverters at the service point. A battery that has been derated but has a maximum inverter capability above 10 kW does not preserve eligibility, because maximum inverter capability governs rather than the derated setting.

Size bands and what each one obliges

Residential, 10 kW AC or less Size 0 to 10 kW

Residential applications are limited to a peak generating capacity of 10 kW AC or less. A one time interconnection fee applies whose amount is published only by cross reference to the utility rules rather than in the tariff.

Commercial, above 10 kW AC to 250 kW AC Size 10.001 to 250 kW

Commercial applications are limited to 250 kW AC. Between 100 kW AC and 250 kW AC the resource may not exceed 125 percent of the preceding year metered peak demand of the premises it serves, which is a demand test in kilowatts rather than an energy test.

The screens that decide it

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. Is this address served by Georgia Power, an electric membership corporation or a municipal system? Georgia has no statewide standard, so outside Georgia Power none of this applies and the local utility sets its own terms.
  2. How much of the 0.2 percent of annual peak demand cap on instantaneous netting remains? The monthly netting pilot of five thousand customers is closed on the face of the current tariff and is not available for additional participation.
  3. What is the one time interconnection fee and the insurance requirement? Both live in Section G of the utility rules and regulations rather than in the published tariff.
  4. How long will review, inspection and permission to operate take? Georgia publishes a six step process with no committed day count at any step, so no defensible timeline can be given from a published source.

Worth knowing before you quote

Georgia publishes no interconnection screens at all. There is no 15 percent line section screen, no fault current screen and no interrupting capability screen in any Commission rule or in the utility documents read, so a Georgia site cannot be pre qualified on published hosting criteria the way a Carolina or Virginia site can. Technical review runs on internal documents referenced but not published. Energy offset only is the default: a customer who installs behind the meter generation without electing a program is automatically enrolled in a non export arrangement with no compensation for excess energy. Storage requires a separate non export application form.

Read and recorded 2026-09-12. Georgia has no statewide interconnection standard. Public Service Commission Rules Chapter 515-3-4 covers integrated resource planning only and contains no interconnection provisions, no tiers, no fees and no timelines. What is recorded here is Georgia Power own filed tariff. The forty one electric membership corporations and the municipal systems are outside the Commission retail jurisdiction and set their own terms, so in Georgia service territory is the first question and it is not a formality.
