How the size is measured

gross power rating: the total manufacturer AC nameplate generating capacity of the renewable generation system. For inverter based systems the AC nameplate generating capacity is calculated by multiplying the total installed DC nameplate generating capacity by 0.85 to account for losses during the conversion from DC to AC. The inverter own rating does not determine the tier, so sizing to the Tier 1 boundary means a DC ceiling of 11.764 kW.

Size bands and what each one obliges

Tier 1 Size 0 to 10 kW

No application fee and no liability insurance requirement.

Tier 2 Size 10.001 to 100 kW

A $250 one time non refundable application fee applies and insurance of not less than $1,000,000 is required, renewed annually. Tampa Electric charges the customer nothing for a Tier 2 study.

Tier 3 Size 100.001 to 2000 kW

A $500 application fee applies, the lowest Tier 3 fee among the Florida investor owned utilities, and insurance of not less than $2,000,000 is required, renewed annually.

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. What is the utility distribution service rating at this address? The gross power rating may not exceed 90 percent of it, and the customer pays for upgrades if it does.
  2. If a battery of 1 kW or more is included, confirm the separate Battery Interconnection Agreement under tariff Sheet 8.1150 is in the packet.
  3. If the customer wants to self insure, Tampa Electric requires prior written approval and responds within 30 business days. Is that route open here?

Worth knowing before you quote

Tampa Electric publishes no percentage of annual consumption test and no aggregate program cap. A $37 fee is charged when an inspection cannot be completed for any reason, including a failed inspection, and per re-inspection. Interconnection approval may take up to 30 calendar days from a completed application. Any system upgrade charge requires prior Public Service Commission approval. There must be no intentional islanding.
