How the size is measured

gross power rating: the total manufacturer AC nameplate generating capacity of the on site customer owned generation system. For inverter based systems JEA calculates it by multiplying the total installed DC nameplate generating capacity by 0.85 to account for losses in the conversion from DC to AC.

DG-1, 50 kW to 100 kW Size 50 to 100 kW

At 50 kW and above the customer requires standby and supplemental energy from JEA and must take service under Rate Schedule SS-1. That is a rate class change rather than a one time fee, so it is a recurring cost that has to be modeled before quoting.

DG-1, above 100 kW to 2 MW Size 100.001 to 2000 kW

Above 100 kW the requirements step up sharply: proof of general liability insurance of two million dollars, an externally accessible lockable AC disconnect close to the meter, and application fees as established in the JEA Electric Service Tariff. JEA performs an interconnection study and any additional protection equipment it identifies is at the customer expense.

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. What is the utility distribution service rating at this address? JEA requires the gross power rating not to exceed 90 percent of it, and that rating covers the distribution transformer and the service conductor.
  2. What is the application fee for this system size? The policy defers the amount to the JEA Electric Service Tariff rather than stating it.
  3. What is the current fuel charge? Exports are credited at the fuel charge rather than the retail rate, and JEA sets it annually during the budget process effective 1 October.
  4. Is this system grandfathered into the older net metering policy? Grandfathering attaches to the system rather than the customer and survives a home sale, so an existing array may carry it.
  5. Has JEA imposed an aggregate limit on intermittent renewables on this circuit? The policy reserves that right at management sole discretion and states that none is currently proposed.

Worth knowing before you quote

Exported energy is credited at the fuel charge multiplied by the kilowatt hours sent to JEA, not at the retail rate, and the customer always pays the monthly customer charge and the retail rate on energy received even in a month of net zero consumption. JEA reserves the right to impose aggregate limits on intermittent renewables based on local or system wide electrical limits, and states that currently no aggregate system load limit is proposed. Grandfathering into the 2 December 2014 net metering policy runs 20 years and expires 31 March 2038; it attaches to the system rather than the customer, survives a sale of the home, and cannot be moved to a new address. A separate new home provision covers systems contracted by 31 December 2017 and constructed by 30 June 2018, grandfathered 20 years from completion and no later than 1 July 2038. Customers retain the renewable energy attributes of generation they use themselves, and those attributes transfer to JEA for any kilowatt hours JEA purchases. The startup sequence is fixed: the contractor notifies the permit office, the permit office notifies JEA and JEA will not proceed without it, a JEA engineer inspects the interconnection, then a meter technician installs a dual register meter and only then may the system be turned on. Energizing early carries a stated consequence, that JEA discontinues electrical service to the location until the system is disconnected. A distributed generation customer may not also be enrolled in JEA MyWay. Applications are filed through the PowerClerk portal at jeadistgen.powerclerk.com or emailed to distgen@jea.com. As of 31 December 2024 JEA reported 5,106 customer owned renewable interconnections totaling 44,937.74 kW AC to the Public Service Commission.

Read and recorded 2026-09-12. Municipal utility. Not bound by Florida Administrative Code Rule 25-6.065, which applies to investor owned utilities. Sets its own interconnection terms. JEA links to this policy from its live program pages but both document links are broken: the technical requirements link points at an internal content management host and the policy link redirects to its parent page. The text was recovered from the Internet Archive capture of the JEA page. Currency is confirmed twice: JEA told Commission staff in a filing dated 14 August 2023 that the policy took effect on 1 April 2018 and is currently still active, and the live JEA pages still describe the same program. Ask JEA for a current signed copy before relying on it for a large project.
