How the size is measured

Size bands and what each one obliges

Tier 1 Size 0 to 10 kW

10 kW DC or less. No application fee is listed. The agreement requires liability insurance of not less than $100,000.

Tier 2 Size 10.001 to 100 kW

Greater than 10 kW DC and up to 100 kW DC. A one time $400 application fee is charged to the utility bill and is non refundable. The agreement states insurance of at least $300,000 while the GRU web page states $1,000,000, so confirm before quoting.

Tier 3 Size 100.001 to 2000 kW

Greater than 100 kW DC and up to 2 MW DC. A one time $1,000 non refundable application fee applies. The agreement states insurance of at least $1,000,000 while the GRU web page states $2,000,000. The owner pays all system impact study costs and GRU will not approve interconnection until the study is complete.

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. GRU publishes two different insurance schedules. The interconnection agreement says $100,000, $300,000 and $1,000,000 by tier while the net metering web page says $100,000, $1,000,000 and $2,000,000. Which governs this application?
  2. Does the circuit at this address have sufficient capacity, and is the proposed system considered oversized? GRU screens this through the Letter of Intent and publishes no percentage.
  3. Confirm the export credit rate. GRU credits excess energy at the fuel adjustment rate, listed at $0.0350 per kWh in the FY2025 rate sheet, against a residential retail energy charge of $0.0846 below 850 kWh and $0.1121 above it.

Worth knowing before you quote

GRU is not retail net metering. Excess energy is credited at the fuel adjustment rate, roughly a third of the retail energy charge above 850 kWh, and is trued up annually at an avoided cost price GRU reserves the right to modify at any time without prior notice. Economics in Gainesville are driven by self consumption, not export. The feed in tariff is closed to new applicants. A $100 failure to show fee applies when a contractor misses a scheduled meter set appointment. Approvals are honored for one year and rescinded after a year of inactivity. GRU publishes no consumption cap, no aggregate cap, no storage provision and no committed days to permission to operate.
