How the size is measured

gross power rating: the total manufacturer AC nameplate generating capacity of the renewable generation system. For inverter based systems the AC nameplate generating capacity is calculated by multiplying the total installed DC nameplate generating capacity by 0.85 to account for losses during the conversion from DC to AC. The inverter own rating does not determine the tier, so sizing to the Tier 1 boundary means a DC ceiling of 11.764 kW.

Size bands and what each one obliges

Tier 1 Size 0 to 10 kW

No application fee. Insurance of not less than $100,000 is recommended but not required.

Tier 2 Size 10.001 to 100 kW

A $240 application fee applies, the lowest Tier 2 fee among the Florida investor owned utilities, and insurance of not less than $1,000,000 is required with proof of continuing coverage annually.

Ask the utility this, before you sell it

  1. What is the transformer or service drop rating at this address? Duke inspects primarily to check that the system rating does not exceed 90 percent of it, and the applicant pays for any upgrade.
  2. Duke publishes no percentage of annual consumption test. Confirm whether one will be applied to this application.
  3. Duke publishes nothing on battery storage in its tier pages. If a battery is included, confirm what Duke requires.

Worth knowing before you quote

Duke publishes no consumption percentage, no storage rules and no aggregate program cap. Timelines are published per tier: Tier 1 meter replacement within three weeks of a completed application and permission to operate usually within 10 business days of completing requirements; Tier 2 roughly three to four weeks total; Tier 3 adds up to 30 business days of system impact analysis. No customer may operate generation in parallel without prior written consent. As of 31 December 2024 Duke reported 89,710 interconnections totaling 856,734 kW AC.
